Beginning November 17th, 2008, Latvian citizens traveling to the United States for a period of 90 days or less, for business or tourism purposes, will no longer require obtaining a visa.

In order to qualify for visa free travel, a traveler requires to hold the new-type biometric passports and also requires to register with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

The President of the United States met with Central and Eastern European representatives on October 27, 2008 at the White House. Visa Waiver, which we have been tracking on our web site continues its path towards implementation. Various news sources have identified November 17, 2008 as the target date for Latvians to be able to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program.

Blue skies and sunshine were a precursor for the festive event that took place this morning at the White House's Rose Garden. On a bright and sunny October morning, US President, George W. Bush announced that the US intends to admit seven new countries into the Visa Waiver Program. This includes the three Baltic countries; Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) enables nationals of certain countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa.

Twenty-seven countries currently are in the program. The Republic of Latvia is one of 8 countries that are next in line for joining the VWP.
